I received a really interesting email this week. It was from a lady who lived in the San Jose area of California. She wrote to me asking what a hot tub cover is, and why would she need one.
In reality, this is an ongoing question for many people, especially those that are new at how to care for their hot tub. But the truth is, most people don’t need one, because as long as you tend to the hot tub regularly and closely, you aren’t going to have any problem using it.
It’s true that we understand the difficulties that people have when they have a new hot tub installed without a cover, and I can certainly understand the confusion and frustration some people can have.
Do You Really Need a Hot Tub Cover?
It doesn’t matter what you buy or how often you tend to the hot tub regularly; you need a hot tub cover. If you don’t have one, then you’re just asking for problems. This can just be from an environmental standpoint, but I’ve seen people who have suffered from serious burns from being exposed to the water, and it’s nothing to be worried about.
On the other hand, if you’ve ever been in a swimming pool and have gotten your clothing caught up in the drain, or have ever been in a hot tub that hasn’t been covered properly then you know the lengths that many people go to in order to avoid these situations from happening. Besides, the reality is that hot tub covers are not all that expensive, so you can have one for treating your spa pool just as well as a swimming pool.
The Added Value
A hot tub cover is also something that can add value to your home, this is something which most people understand and are willing to include in their budget if it wasn’t included before and is something that you can use to determine what you think is a reasonable selling price.
On the other side of the fence is a hot tub owner who’s been out a long time and now is looking to sell his house, looking to get something for his house is a totally different situation. What you need to realize is that you cannot get the money you paid for your hot tub anywhere in the world unless you have a good product to begin with.

That’s something that has happened in the past few years, where hot tub owners have been out post Christmas selling their hot tubs and finding themselves not only out of value, but into a position where they can actually get money for their investment.
At first I honestly believed that this scenario was only going to be a temporary relief, however if you have ever had the experience of not having a good hot tub cover when you need it, I urge you to consider the fact that it truly does happen. It can actually happen when you are most in need of a hot tub cover, such as when you are having a pool party, or you buy an expensive party.
SPA and Pool Covers Matter Too
While we are on the subject of hot tub covers, we also have to address another time consuming task that has come down as a result of the overwhelming demand for hot tub covers for spa pools. For the most part these hot tub covers are not like the other heavy duty furniture items that we are accustomed to seeing. They are made from heavy duty vinyl and they are shaped to be unique, often on the top you will find a solid cover but often at the bottom you will find a nice solid vinyl cover.
What you will see is these covers sometimes containing what I like to refer to as a fish globe design, this design includes a large glass inset right in the middle of the cover to capture as much light as possible. The reason for this design was to deal with the heat issues that didn’t allow the simple colored covers to hold-in the heat as well as roasting marshmallows over the real deal.
